About the department

The Department of Geography was established in the year 1996 for teaching Honours course under the University of Calcutta, later affiliated to West Bengal State University since 2008. The department provides training in the practical modules of the course curriculum to help understand the natural environment, physical forces of nature and biodiversity. The teachers are competent to teach different branches of Geography including Geographical Information System and Remote Sensing.

The laboratory of the department has a wide variety of instruments available for the students. The Maps section is a store house of a wide collection of topographical maps, aerial photographs and satellite images. The Department also has a modern survey instrument like 'Total Station'. In 2020, the department has been enrolled as a nodal centre of e-learning and outreach programmes conducted by Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Department of Space, Government of India. Presently this department has collaborations with several research and academic institutions including Integrated Institute for Advanced Research and Information (IIARI), Kolkata and Purbasha Eco Helpline Society, Sundarban.
